Our Golden family in more detail is:

Cailloch Meg O’ The Mill - (30/3/02) (Amberland Arrow ex Amilone Remembrance)

‘Meggie’ is our oldest girl, from our first golden litter, and was an accidental addition to the family. We hadn’t intended to keep a puppy, but fate had other plans for us. Meg was twice booked by families who for one reason or another had to cancel. By the second time, we were all secretly pleased, as we had fallen in love with her. Not suitable for the show ring or for breeding, Meg is simply a pet. She has always ‘danced to the beat of a different drum’: comical, laid back and a complete couch potato given half a chance. Nicknamed ‘Smug’, she enjoys an ear rub best of all, but her laid back character belies a shrewd intelligence. She has a passion for large yellow duck cuddly toys, which she will search out in the toy basket and cuddle between her paws. She loves eating raw vegetables of all kinds as well as grass and tissues. It was because she has such delightful, if a little eccentric, temperament we decided that she had to stay.

‘Corran’ was born on her cousin Meg’s first birthday, one of seven girls in a litter of nine beautiful puppies. Again we did not plan to keep a puppy, and she began her life with a lovely family in the Isle Of Man who planned to show her and start their own breeding line. Again fate took a hand, because the family had to change their plans almost immediately after she arrived. I know it was a very difficult decision to send her home, but very easy for us to decide to keep her. She hit us like a whirlwind and hasn’t stopped since, bursting with energy, she was a mischievous puppy, but also loving and playful.
She has matured into a gentle loving adult and was a wonderful mum to her puppies in 2006. Corran had a terrific start to her show career, winning rosettes at every Open show she has attended.
Highlights are:
Winner of Midland Golden Retriever Puppy Walk September 2003.

Crufts 2004 where she was shortlisted to the last 8 in a class of 28 entries.

Her litter sister ‘Cailloch Racer to Tenfield JW’ (Chase) had a stunning start to her career and lives with her Dad Rowan, and several other relations at the ‘Tenfield’ kennel in Wiltshire. Chase won a place in the final of the PetPlan Junior Stakes in 2004. Chase’s son ‘Tenfield Border Racer’ (Fig) has had great success in France with his owner Shirley Hall-Roberts (Beauchasseur) winning CACs and Best in Show.

When I asked Jack what he wanted for Christmas in December 2005, I was stunned when he asked for his own puppy. We had no plans to have a litter of our own until late 2006, so we started looking elsewhere for one. It took a while until the lovely ‘Rhea’ came to live with us in May. Jack worked very hard to make Rhea ‘his’ dog, and she certainly idolises him! Rhea has entered a few shows, but we think her forte may lie in working, as she is very clever, biddable and has a tremendous urge to please. Add that to a keen instinct to retrieve, and an interest on Jack’s part to learn to work a dog himself, and we will see how it goes.
We hope to have a litter of puppies from Rhea in early 2009.

Teal’ has been a joy from the beginning. She is funny and playful full of licks and paws and likes best of all to play with Rhea, who treats her like her own puppy. She has not had the chance to go to many shows because our move to Gloucestershire and the months of weekend house-hunting beforehand prevented us from going to many. Nicola has nicknamed her ‘Teagle’, and taught her to ‘high five’. Her mum on the other hand has taught her to dig holes in the garden, and bark at squirrels. Rhea has taught her how to roll in mud.

As you can see, we liked the first one so much we got our second from the same breeder. ‘Callie’ was a real clown. Full of energy, desperate to please, with a ball wedged firmly in her mouth, just in case anybody fancied a game, and a tail that swept everything out of its path. Her favourite thing in the entire world was to chase a ball which she would drop expectantly at your feet for you to throw again. If you didn’t, she would prod you to remind you, and grin expectantly with her tail lashing from side to side until you did.
Callie had some early success in the show ring, but her efforts were hampered by inexperience: both hers and ours! She did not seem to like showing very much but motherhood certainly seemed to suit her: she presented us with 18 beautiful offspring in her two litters.
Callie was my devoted companion, always close by, with her ball ready for the next opportunity to play. She sadly left us far too young, at only 5 years old after a very short and brutal battle. We miss her dreadfully.

We felt that Callie’s lovely construction was best reflected in ‘Chase’ (Cailloch Racer To Tenfield) so we asked her owner Kim Ellis for a Chase daughter as an ‘echo’ of her grandma. Kim chose her name, and the circle was completed when ‘Echo’ came to live with us in July. She settled in very quickly, making friends with the older girls, especially Rhea, and to begin with rather putting Teal’s nose out of joint! However, when Teal realised that puppies are for playing with, she decided she wanted to be the new puppy’s best friend. They play together endlessly. Echo has a lovely sweet nature, and extra waggy tail. She is quick to greet everyone who comes to visit. She is attending ringcraft classes and will make her show debut after she turns six months old in November 2008. She has also had a taste of proper gundog training too. Her natural desire to please coupled with her innate retrieving instinct shows real promise.

It always makes me smile when people describe their dogs as ‘A true gentleman, and ambassador for the breed’. No-one could ever describe my Reme as ‘a proper lady’. She was greedy and nosey and vocal, grabbed sleeves and liked to stand on you. She was also loving and steadfast and brave - so long as ‘it’ wasn’t a hot air balloon or fireworks - and truly believed every person or dog she met was a new friend. Nicola and I met her in October 1999. She was then 10 months old and stole my heart. She has held it captive ever since. We collected her at the beginning of November, and she began to teach us what we needed to know about golden retrievers.
I remember her jumping to catch snowflakes in our back garden in Stoke Mandeville. I remember her playing hide-and-seek with Nicola. I remember our walks in the fields behind the house during our first summer. I remember her chin resting on my knee and our cuddles on the sofa throughout the long evenings when Jack was abroad.  I remember the lizard-tongued dog-snogs that made me gag. I remember her disgust when we got Callie, which soon turned to friendship. I remember the ‘Best Biscuit Catcher’ three years running at Whiteleaf Dog Club Christmas party. I remember her proudly licking her puppies, and her sighs of contentment when we allowed her to sleep on our bed.

She set me on a road that changed our lives forever, and introduced me to some of the best friends I will ever have, both canine and human. Thank you Ruth, from the bottom of my heart for trusting us with our precious girl.
The years went too swiftly. Sleep well my darling Big Dog. Life is very quiet without you and I miss you more than I can say.
